Joseph M. Loftus, M.D., 77, of the Hudson section of Plains Township died Thursday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Plains Township, he was a son of the late Anthony F. and Kathryn McManus Loftus. He was a 1938 graduate of Plains Memorial High School, a 1942 graduate of Scranton University and a 1945 graduate of Jefferson Medical College.
He served his internship and surgical residency at Mercy Hospital, where he had been a member of the staff for 50 years. He was a past president of the medical staff and a board member for 13 years. He retired in 1994 from his private practice in Plains Township.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of American Legion Joseph E. Conlon Post 558, Plains Township. He was a Fourth Degree Knight in Knights of Columbus Council 302, and a member of the Donegal Society and the Alhambra, all in Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Plains Township.
He was preceded in death by his wives, the former Laura Heck, in 1971; and the former Sadie Morris, in 1994; and brother, Dr. Thomas M. Loftus, in 1994. Surviving are two nephews and two nieces.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 S. Main St., Plains Township with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Plains Township.
