He began active duty in September, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts where he attended a 6 week course at a Navy Training School. Upon completion of this course he became a Gunnery Officer with the Navy's Armed Guard, which provided gun crews aboard the US merchant ships that carried supplies and troops. Dad was assigned to the Brooklyn Armed Guard Center that supplied all crew and gunnery for ships crossing the Atlantic. |
