He was a 1937 graduate of Coughlin High School, and was a lifelong resident of Parsons. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton. He was a navy veteran of World War II.
He operated Gills Economy Store on George Avenue until 1967. He later was employed with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare as a caseworker, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. Dominic’s Church, Wilkes-Barre. He was a charter member of Wilkes-Barre Municipal Golf Course and was an avid golfer.
He was preceeded in death by his brother John J. Gill M.D. Surviving are his wife, the former Patricia McGlynn; sons, Francis, Lakewood, NJ; Robert, Spotswood, NJ; Brian, Wilkes-Barre; brothers, the Rev. Nicholas Gill C.P., New York, NY; Thomas Gill, Esq., Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Sr. Marita Gill, I.H.M., Pittston; grandchildren, Patrick, Kelly, Maura and Caitlin.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday from E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Dominic’s Church, with the Rev. Nicholas Gill, her brother, officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, may be made to King’s College, c/o Thomas and Margaret Gill Scholarship, Alumni Office, Wilkes-Barre, 18711 or to Hospice Community Care Inc., 385 Wyoming Ave. Kingston, 18704.
