Michael Rushton (1917-2009)

Michael B. Rushton

Michael B. Rushton, a lifelong resident of the East End section of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Saturday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

He was a son of the late Michael and Josephine Gill Rushton. Mr. Rushton was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School and Sterling Institute in Washington, D.C. and attended Wilkes University.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in military intelligence for four years.

Mr. Rushton was employed by the Department of Commerce, the Veterans Administration as a management analysis officer and the Economic Development Administration as an assistant to the area field director.

Following his retirement, he worked as Pennsylvania Veterans’ Service Officer in Wilkes-Barre and at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Most of his life was dedicated to the assistance and care of veterans.

Mr. Rushton was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Area School Board for 24 years. He also served on the boards of Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18 and Wilkes-Barre Vo-Tech School.

Mr. Rushton was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Housing Authority, Wilkes-Barre City Redevelopment Authority, the boards of directors of Kirby Health Center and Osterhout Free Library and the Veterans Committee at the Wilkes-Barre Department of Veterans Affairs. He was a member and past president of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Democratic Club.

Mr. Rushton was a past-commander and life member of American Legion Post 132, life member of VFW Post 50 and a member of AmVets Post 59.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Cullison Rushton, who died in 1946; brothers, James, Gilbert, Harold, William, Leo and Richard; and a sister, Doris Thompson.

Surviving are his son, Michael and his wife, Carol Rushton, of Wilkes-Barre; sister, Ruth Bordash of Edwardsville; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from McLaughlin Family Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Saviour Church. Entombment will be in Saint Mary’s Mausoleum in Hanover Township. Friends may call Tuesday, 3 to 7 p.m.
