Joseph N. Gill

Joseph N. Gill, 84, of Henry Street, Plains Township, passed away Thursday evening, August 12, 2010, in the Golden Living Center, East Mountain, Plains Township. Born in Plains Township, he was a son of the late Peter and Mary Duffy Gill. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Class of 1945. Joseph was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Midway.

For many years he was employed at Planters as a supervisor, and, prior to his retirement, he was employed at Topps Chewing Gum of Duryea. Mr. Gill was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Parish of Plains Township, where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Wyoming Valley Retreat League, Topps Bowling League and a volunteer at the Kirby Center.

He was also involved in several senior citizen clubs in the area along with the Big Band Society and the Teamsters Union Local 401 of Wilkes-Barre.

Preceding him in death were his wife, the former Florence Sheraski; sisters, Kathryn McCall, Celestine Waskiewicz and Mildred Gill; and brothers, Peter Gill, Thomas Gill, Donald Gill.

Surviving are children, Joseph Gill, Plains Township, Marie Lishnak and her husband, Peter, Plains Township, Charles Gill and his wife, Susan, Beachwood, N.J., James Gill and his wife, Joy, State College; Robert Gill, Plains Township; Brian Gill and his wife, Donna, Larksville; Karen Kopcza and her husband, Joseph, Wyoming; 13 grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8:50 a.m. Monday from the Metcalfe and Shaver Funeral Home Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plains Township. Interment will be in the Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Plains Township. Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ss. Peter & Paul Building Fund, 13 Hudson Rd., Plains Township, PA 18705.
