Helen Gilroy (Sister Ellenita) (1917-2000)

Sister Ellenita Gilroy, IHM

Sister Ellenita Gilroy of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday at the Marian Convent.

She was born Helen Gilroy in 1917 in Pittston, daughter of the late John and Mary Walsh Gilroy. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Marywood College. Sister Ellenita entered the IHM Congregation Feb. 2, 1938, made her temporary profession of vows Aug. 2, 1940 and her final profession of vows on Aug. 1, 1943.

She was a teacher at St. Charles Elementary School, Sugar Notch, 1947-53; St. Cecilia Elementary School, Exeter, 1956-64; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School, Scranton, 1964-66; St. Paul Elementary School, Scranton, 1966-69; St. John Elementary School, Susquehanna, 1969-74; and at schools in Danville and New Bern, N.C.; Baltimore, Md.; and Bridgeport, Conn.

She served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 1975 until the time of her death. Sisters, Regina Newcomb, Romayne Brislin and Agnes O’Hara; brothers, Edmund and Joseph, preceded her in death. Surviving are brother, John, Alachua, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 10:30 with a Mass of Christian Burial in Marian Convent. Interment will be in St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call Tuesday, 2 to 8, at the Marian Convent. Memorial donations may be made to IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.
